How to Avoid Getting Sick
I recently had a patient and his entire family (wife and five children) start care in our office. After a couple of weeks, he pulled me aside after an adjustment and shared with me that before the seven of them began getting adjusted, he was skeptical about the benefits of chiropractic care for his kids. But then something happened.
The kids got sick. And then immediately, within a day or two, they got better. To me, there is nothing unusual about this. To that family, however, this situation was extraordinary. You see, their kids get sick fairly often (getting sick more than twice a year is not normal). Then they stay sick for at least a week (staying sick for more than two or three days is not normal). Then the parents would get sick (it’s not true that spreading germs to each other makes us “sick” – twenty people can be exposed to the same germs, and only five get “sick”) – this time they did not get sick. One child in particular would usually develop bronchitis and be placed on antibiotics whenever she got a cold. This time she did not.
I take for granted that getting adjusted boosts the immune system. My kids are six years old and four years old, and neither one has ever had an ear infection, strep throat, or anything else aside form an occasional cold. Neither of them has ever taken antibiotics or any other medication including cold medicine or children’s Tylenol. When they don’t feel well, we watch them, feed them healthy foods, make sure they get plenty of sleep, and most importantly of all, adjust them. As a result, they are the healthiest children I know.
If you’re still not sure about the link between chiropractic and your immune system, think about it. Your immune system controls every function in your body, including immunity. Your white blood cells, which fight off infection, have receptors directly on them that are designed for neurotransmitters (the chemicals your nervous system used to send messages to itself and other systems of the body). If your nervous system is not working properly, then your immune system can’t be, either.
In fact, did you know that there is more scientific evidence showing the benefit of chiropractic on immune system function than on low back pain? Here’s a partial list of articles and studies linking neurotransmitters and immune system function:
LIST OF CHIROPRACTIC AND IMMUNE FUNCTION REFERENCES
Some highlights:
- Chiropractic adjustments increase interleukin-2 levels, CD4 cell levels, and mitochondrial respiratory burst of white blood cells.
- Chiropractic patients have immune systems 200% stronger than non-patients, and 400% stronger than cancer patients
- Chiropractic adjustments lower cortisol levels (cortisol suppresses immune system function)
- During the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, chiropractic was way more effective at helping flu patients than medicine
